What's New on the Site?

This page contains details of coming events and the latest modifications to the site so that members can keep up to date with developments

A major addition to the facilities of the website is now in being. This is the provision of an RSS feed. This should simplify access to new items on the website and facilitate rapid communications to members and associates. How it works and how you can use it are explained Here

Adjacent is a Revamped Site Searcher provided by Professor Knowall
Enter any keywords or phrases and the searcher will locate these in any of the documents on site. In addition as we are an Historical Society the searcher will look for particular years as well. Wild cards may now be used. Thus Cornwall, Carn Brea, Peter Lamb, SWEB, 1897, blet* park and swe? are all valid entries. No large download is now required and results obtained fast

Tramways News

This months Histelec Newsletter has amongst its contibutors John Ferrier reporting on his holiday experiences as a railway enthusiast in Australia. This however is not his sole contribution to SWEHS. He also has supplied us with the first actual picture of the Swanpool Beach miniature Railway together with views of the location. These are now available on the Falmouth -Swanpool Beach page in the tramways section. Do have a look at it.

There are other changes in the tramways section. The new videoplayer demonstrated in the item on the Dynasphere further down this page has also been used to show the Bournemouth Trolleybus videos. A new page of "Tramways Elsewhere" has been added in deference to the fact that members travelling far and wide often come acrross items that deserve attention. To give it a start a video of trams obtained during a 15 minute session at a street corner in Prague has been included.

Dr J.A.Purves and the "Dynasphere"

Peter Lamb in looking for information on Dr J.A.Purves (see this item in Histelec No.26) was given a great deal of information by John Perkin including some video items by Pathe. These were filmed in 1932 at Weston-super-Mare (Brean Sands) and at Brooklands. I am sure these would be of interest to many of our members and visitors. Videos on websites do however present difficulties unless specialised more expensive video servers are employed.

As a trial here is a different way of presenting videos and photos on the site. You may have to download a free flash player and you should also have Windows Media Player 8 or later on your computer.

Clicking on the play symbol on the player that has appeared provides an automatic run through all the clips for those with broadband. If you do not have broadband the please click on "options" button and untick the auto play feature. You can then highlight any individual clip in the left hand table and just play that clip. When the mouse is over the clip a yellow text box appears with information - the figure in brackets at the beginning of the text give the size of the clip in kbytes - you can use this to decide how long the clip will take to appear.

The video clips are provided with sound which can be adjusted with the second slider at the bottom of the player. Do listen to the Lady's (Purves wife?) instructions and you will finding driving the Dynasphere a cinch!

As an amateur web master I am totally beholden for this form of player to the Media College dot Com. Details of this available at www.mediacollege.com/flash/media-player. Please let me know if you find this type of presentation useful.
