RSS Feeds Explained

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) for the Website

What is RSS?

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds are an easy and efficient way to receive notification when new information is available on a website. Headings and summaries of items on the website are made available. It is also a splendid way of reminding members of events and actions.

What is the Benefit From RSS?

RSS feeds save time, allowing you to receive notification only when new content is available. On the web site you can choose the information that you would like to receive by subscribing to it - you can unsubscribe from any feed at any time.

How To Subscribe to RSS Feeds?

If you are using the latest Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Browsers - these are already equipped to handle RSS feeds ( you may be asked to install the latest Framework) . However if you have an older browser or one not capable of handling these feeds Then you will need an RSS feed reader (also called a news aggregator). There are a number of RSS readers available to download from the internet. The "rssreader" obtained from http://www.rssreader.com/ is one that I have used in XP and another is the Abilon reader obtained from www.pcworld.com/downloads used in Vista. RSS readers are simply programs that display the contents of an RSS feed in an easy to read format. They work in the background collecting the data when the computer is idle or has spare capacity.

Once you have an RSS reader you simply click on the RSS icon or on a link to the RSS feed and paste it into your RSS reader. Some readers will auto detect the presence of an RSS feed on a website and can offer you as an option a subscription.
