vmess[cc]="I found your site fascinating. Regarding Camborne-Redruth tramways: The picture of the mineral trams was taken at TREVENSON (not Trevelsor). These mineral trams, incidentally, were known as 'tin cars'.I can recall that all the lamp-posts between Camborne and Redruth were the old tram poles. They were all replaced at the same time in the 1960s.";
vrepl[cc]='Welcome to the site with your kind words. I am concerned that our Cornish members have not previously corrected the tramways text but glad for your contribution from a somewhat drier location than ours.
Marcus Palmen';

vmess[cc]='Greetings Marcus
Superb set of photos of Buckfastleigh Railway trip on Thurs last, in spite of the weather!
Looking throgh past visits we discovered that there is no gallery for Cornwall 2004, or for Ironbridge 1999 (I think). Possibly other visits also, and we are wondering why? - maybe because you we not there. If so, do you think it feasable to obtain such photos from other members present? - there must be some available.
Best Regards
John';
vrepl[cc]='Hi John
I distinctly remember Ironbridge and the only reason it is missing is because it was hard work converting slides to individual web pages at the time so never got round to it. Now I simply transfer from the digital camera to a list in the computer and the page is generated as and when required. I missed the Cornwall Outing and no doubt others such as the Seaton Tramway Visit for which however photo’s were supplied by a participant . I would be happy to include missing visits if photographs can be supplied by any member.
Cheers Marcus';

vmess[cc]="Dear Marcus
I have been looking at your website on Bristol Trams. My grandfather Donald M. Grahame was a tram driver, and I am sure he ran out of Staple Hill. He lived on the Hillfields Estate, so I am assuming this was where he was based.
I have in my possession a medal that was presented to him in 1940 and the inscription of the front of the medal reads as follows:-

Safe Driving competition, 5 years Drivers Award the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents with gold colouring with red safety triangle

On the reverse of the medal is as follows:-

War Substitute for Silver Medal
engraved D.M. Grahame

The ribbon is a dark green with orange zig zag running up.
The pin bar at the top is engraved 1940.
I have some photos of him taken on one of the trams and also a group photo of the drivers and conductors at one of the Depot's in Bristol.
Would you or anyone else have any information on the medal please. My grandfather worked in the offices of Lawrence Hill Bus Depot until his retirement. Sadly he passed away in 1967.
Please if you have any information, could you reply using email";
vrepl[cc]='Dear Andrena
Thank you for your enquiry. I find that we tend to have more information about the trams than of the people who ran them. However there may well be information about the medal. I will pass on your query and also show the photos and hope we get a result.
Marcus Palmen - SWEHS Web Master.

Here are the Photographs:-

Staple Hill Depot Group Photo

Posing in front of a tram -Andrenas grandfather is furthest right

It is difficult to distiguish him in the top photo - clicking on the photo will bring it to window size - but as the original photo was a small postcard size the detail is lacking
However who are the others on the photos - let us know if you know someone';

Pursuing the link of Christie Bros and the North Somerset Electricity Company has brought me to your site. If any members can shed further light on the Tyntesfield story I should be very pleased to hear - in particular the date of installation of the replacement generating plant in the 1920's to facilitate a check of the Ruston-Hornsby archive. I am grateful to Hari Williams for his excellent work on the subject.";

Surprisingly, my kids (teen and pre-teen) had never heard of Grand Coulee Dam, nor were they aware of the geological processes which formed the coulees and scablands of eastern Washington State. While the fact that after years of public schooling they were unaware of their own backyard made me want to puke, your site had the most wonderful photos of Grand Coulee Dam that I was able to show them, and I wanted to thank you.

Dana Booth

";

vrepl[cc]='A note on the Underfall Yard a boatyard located by the "Floating Harbour" might not come amiss:

Underfall Yard takes its name from the Underfall Sluices and you can take a tour from the Sluice House.

The Underfalls was originally part of the natural course of the River Avon .

The “ Floating Harbour ” was constructed between 1804 to 1809 to a scheme prepared by William Jessop. The scheme involved a new course for the River Avon (New Cut) from Totterdown to Underfall Yard with a dam at this point. This was an overfall with the level determined by the crest of the dam. In 1832, I K Brunel\'s advice sought about the problem of siltation of the harbour by advising the construction of Underfall Sluices, through the overfall dam, and the disposal of dredged silt to the river through the underfalls using the hydraulic head difference between harbour and low tide level, to scour the silt. In approx. 1900 the four sluice arrangement you see today was installed.

In 1988, the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission designated the whole of this site as an Ancient Monument .

Underfall Yard has recently been refurbished thanks to Lottery money, European funding and financial support from Bristol City Council.

Over the last six years £500,000 has been spent on regenerating the slip and restoring buildings around the boatyard.

Any Ghostly Experiences in the Yard and/or S/S ?
