The Black Country Museum

By the time we visit the site of this "museum" it will contain more restored buildings incuding a fish and chip shop fully working, than shown in the map (top left hand corner)" The boat trip through the vast caverns formed when limestone was excavated and exported should be a unique experience. A working (possibly) Newcomen Engine is another item worthy of interest. Trams or trolleybuses can take you round the site but there is plenty to see and inspect for those who elect to walk.

There will be a school mistress at the school, shop keepers at the shops and boatmen on the boats, all in period dress. If you are bored try the fun fair - an ancient remedy.

The museum has a website at www.bclm.co.uk that gives details of current activites

Warwick

Warwick is one of those places where one can really feel connected to the past. The Earls of Warwick and Robert Dudley, Lord Leycester, Elizabeth I's favourite have put their mark on this town to a great extent. I will not spend words here extolling the virtues of The Beachamp Chapel, or even the Lord Leycester Hospital, but will refer you to the Richard III Gloucester Branch Site where I have described a visit to both.

One of the items of great interest to us is however the Hydro Power Station at Warwick Castle. This is well worth a visit not because they have been able to restore the original water turbines - these are lost, but because they have there a collection of other old engines and generators otherwise destined to be scrapped. Whilst none of these are in use some have beent set in motion by motor drives so that the exhibition is not totally static.

Should there not be sufficient support for a weekend away it may be some time before another biannual occasion can be managed, so do come if possible. I am sure you will not regret it.
